What You Can Do for Excellent Oral Health

father and daughter brushing teeth to maintain oral healthGood oral health is something we take for granted. When I’m crunching on an apple (or biting into the occasional big juicy burger), I’m not giving my teeth a second thought — and I’m even in the healthy tooth business. No, it’s not until we have a problem with our mouths that we really realize how lucky we are to have strong, healthy, beautiful teeth.

We want to remind you at every opportunity how important it is to care for your teeth while they’re healthy, instead of waiting until there’s a problem to get serious about brushing, flossing and visiting your dentist. By that point, it may be too late. At your Mt. Holly dental office, we’ll never get tired of seeing your healthy, beautiful smile — so keep the following tips in mind and enjoy good oral health for a lifetime.

Flossing Helps Keep Your Mouth Clean and Happy

Flossing can keep your teeth looking and feeling healthy. When you brush your teeth (twice a day, we hope), are you also flossing? If the answer is yes, good job! Keep doing what you’re doing. If you aren’t flossing, you’re not doing your mouth any favors. Flossing is one of the most important steps in keeping a healthy mouth. It should always be a part of your daily dental hygiene regimen no matter what. When you wake up in the morning, does your mouth feel a little bit clean or did you bypass brushing and flossing the night before? If you did, does your mouth feel a lot nastier than normal? That’s because all those tasty bits of food you enjoyed last night are now caught in between, on and around your teeth. Brushing helps remove most of it, but floss reaches those tiny spaces where said food particles and other bacteria love to hang out. The Mt. Holly Family Dentistry team is headed by the dentist Mr. Holly, NJ calls their own: Dr. William Greenberg.

Flossing can keep your teeth a lot cleaner than you think. Those tiny spaces can keep food particles trapped, and that’s what causes some side effects including bad breath. It’s time to stop punishing your oral health and give it the care it deserves.

Ready, set, floss!

Sleep Apnea Help in Mt. Holly, NJ

ThinkstockPhotos-177251397Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) effects millions of Americans every year, but CPAP therapy may not be the only solution. Many OSA sufferers notice significant relief by using a small dental appliance. If you suffer from OSA, a visit to the dental team at Mt. Holly Family Dentistry may do you more good than an appointment with a sleep specialist. Find out more about sleep apnea therapy from Mt. Holly Family Dentistry today. Call to schedule a consolation or an appointment for any of our other dental health care services with one of our skilled dental professionals.

Sleep Apnea Signs and Symptoms

Patients who suffer from sleep apnea exhibit a wide range of symptoms, and can be misdiagnosed for years. Seek sleep apnea care if you have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Excessive tiredness throughout the day
  • Inability to remain alert or pay attention
  • Loud, continual snoring
  • Cessation of breathing during sleep
  • Frequently awakening during the night or trouble staying asleep
  • Awakening short of breath
  • Dry mouth, sore threat, or headache in the morning

While mild or moderate occurrences of these warning signs may not be indicative of OSA, see a physician if snoring wakes you or others from sleep, if you wake frequently unable to catch your breath, or your daytime sleepiness causes you to fall asleep at inappropriate times.

Sleep Apnea Left Untreated

Those who suffer from OSA without treatment are more likely to develop numerous chronic illnesses such as:

  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Heart failure or arrhythmia
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Depression
  • ADHD

As you sleep, your body is able to do the work of memory consolidation, cell regeneration, and other bodily healing and repair. Thus, when you don’t get enough sleep, you begin to feel confused and have poor memory because your mind doesn’t have the chance to properly organize and store the events of the previous day. This can contribute to developing depression or ADHD. Other diseases common among long time OSA sufferers are the result of lack of cell regeneration, and excessive strain without repair time.

CPAP Treatment

You may think that sleep apnea is only treatable with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. While this is an effective treatment for both obstructive and central sleep apnea, many patients find it difficult to adjust to sleeping with CPAP machines in place. CPAP consists of a machine that continually pumps air into the mouth and throat through a facial mask. This air ensures that your sleep will be unobstructed. If you have obstructive sleep apnea, there may be a better option.

Snore Guards in Mt. Holly, NJ

A small dental appliance, sometimes called snore guards, can be used to open your airway as you sleep. These small oral appliances move the jaw forward and the tongue away from the back of the throat. This shift in positioning removes the blockage that leads to sleep apnea, letting you rest peacefully throughout the night.

Teeth Whitening for a Bright Summer Smile in Mt. Holly, NJ

159289454Summer is just around the corner, so now is the perfect time to get your smile ready for the good times ahead. Whether you’re planning to take the family to Philly for an educational visit to Independence Hall and a photo op in front of the Liberty Bell, or a vacation on the Jersey shore building sand castles and finding seashells, you want to freely share a smile that reflects your happiness. Come to Mt. Holly Family Dentistry in Mt. Holly, NJ, for teeth whitening and your smile will be as brilliant as the summer sun.

As people age, their teeth tend to become stained and discolored for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the age old aging process itself. Other reasons are:

  • Some of our favorite foods and beverages, such as chocolate, tomatoes, carrots, blueberries, coffee, tea, cola and red wine
  • Chips and cracks in teeth that hide stains from food particles and other debris
  • Teeth grinding and clenching, which tends to darken teeth’s biting edges
  • Certain medications, such as the antibiotic tetracycline
  • Smoking and chewing tobacco
  • Traumatic injury

Teeth Whitening for You

At Mt. Holly Family Dentistry, we have used an at-home teeth whitening system for several years. Our at home tray system uses a professional grade gel that is safe and effective. The custom made tray, which fits snuggly over your teeth is what makes this teeth whitening work well. The gel is held against your teeth where it works without being diluted with saliva or running out into your mouth. Your Mt. Holly dentist will instruct you on how to wear your trays, but typically they are worn for one or two hours every day for 2-3 weeks, possibly longer for stubborn teeth stains.

To have a whiter smile this summer, call Mt. Holly Family Dentistry today and schedule an appointment for teeth whitening. We serve patients from Mt. Holly, NJ, as well as from  Westampton, Hainesport, Lumberton, Springfield, Pemberton, and the neighboring areas.

Invisalign® Creates Straighter Smiles in Mt. Holly, NJ

177000598Did you know that people with straight teeth are commonly considered more intelligent, friendlier and—no surprise—more attractive than people who have smiles that are not straight? If you’re now thinking, “Well yeah, I’d like to have a straighter smile, but I sure don’t want to wear braces at my age,” then think again. You can wear braces that almost no one will notice. With Invisalign from Mt. Holly Family Dentistry in Mt. Holly, NJ, you can have the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted without the hassle and appearance of traditional metal braces.

Invisalign, as the name implies, straightens teeth almost invisibly with clear plastic aligners. These clear braces are made of BPA-free plastic that will not cause mouth sores inside your cheeks or on your gums the way metal braces can. Invisalign aligners simply fit snuggly over your teeth to gently move them into their proper position.

The Invisalign Treatment Process

Dr. Julie Ko-Kim is the certified Invisalign provider at Mt. Holly Family Dentistry. At your first meeting with her, she will evaluate your smile and determine if there are any oral health concerns to address before beginning Invisalign orthodontic treatment. We’ll take x-rays, photographs and impressions of your teeth that Invisalign will use to create a 3-D image of your existing smile. Dr. Ko-Kim will then develop a treatment plan based on this image. This image will show you how your Invisalign treatment will progress and will also be the road map that the Invisalign lab uses to fabricate your aligners.

The Invisalign aligners come in a series of sets. You’ll wear each set for about two weeks, watching your teeth move as you progress through the series. In about a year, treatment will be completed and you’ll have that straighter, more attractive smile.

Call Our Office Today

If you’re ready to have a smile that impresses, then call Mt. Holly Family Dentistry for more information about Invisalign. We serve patients from Mt. Holly, NJ, as well as from  Westampton, Hainesport, Lumberton, Springfield, Pemberton, and the neighboring areas.
