How Invisalign Affects Speech

If you’re considering Invisalign to straighten your teeth, you may have wondered whether wearing clear aligners will affect the way you talk. After all, the aligners sit directly against your teeth and gums, so it makes sense to wonder whether they’ll change the way your mouth moves.

The good news is that any speech changes associated with Invisalign are generally temporary. Most people simply need a little time to adjust to having something new in their mouth.

Why Can Invisalign Affect Speech?

Your tongue, teeth, lips, and palate all work together to produce speech. When you first start wearing Invisalign aligners, the trays can slightly change the space and surfaces your tongue interacts with.

As a result, some people notice a slight lisp or change in the way certain sounds come out. Sounds that require your tongue to contact your teeth or the roof of your mouth may be particularly noticeable.

This doesn’t mean Invisalign will permanently change the way you speak. Your mouth and tongue generally adapt as you become accustomed to the aligners.

Which Sounds Might Be Different?

You may notice changes in certain sounds, particularly “s” and “th” sounds. You might feel as though your speech sounds slightly different or that you have a mild lisp.

For many people, these changes are most noticeable during the first few days of treatment. Others may take a little longer to adjust. Every person is different, and some people don’t notice a significant difference in their speech at all.

How Long Does the Adjustment Take?

Your mouth needs time to get used to the shape and feel of your new aligners. As you continue wearing them, your tongue typically becomes more accustomed to their presence.

The more consistently you wear your aligners according to your treatment plan, the more opportunities your mouth has to adjust. Taking the aligners out frequently just because you’re concerned about your speech may make it harder to become comfortable with them.

If you have an important presentation, interview, or event coming up, give yourself some extra practice time with your aligners beforehand.

Practice Speaking With Your Aligners

One of the simplest ways to become comfortable speaking with Invisalign is to practice. Try reading aloud for a few minutes each day. You can read a book, practice a presentation, talk to yourself, or simply have a conversation while wearing your aligners.

You can also practice specific words or sounds that feel difficult. This gives your tongue more opportunities to adjust to the aligners and can help you become more confident about your speech.

What If My Speech Doesn’t Improve?

A temporary change in speech is usually nothing to worry about, particularly when you’re just beginning treatment. However, if you continue to have significant difficulty speaking after you’ve had time to adjust, mention it to your dentist or orthodontic provider.

Your aligners should be comfortable and fit properly. If something feels unusual or your speech changes significantly after receiving a new set of aligners, your dental team can evaluate the fit and make sure everything is progressing as expected.

A brief adjustment period shouldn’t stand between you and the smile you’re working toward.
