Car Accidents Lead to TMJ | Mt. Holly NJ Dentist

TMJ injuries are one of the most common forms of injury that occurs with automobile accidents.

The Temporomandibular joint better known as TMJ is a small ball and socket area of the jaw that allows it to open and close smoothly. TMJ injuries are one of the most common forms of injury that occurs with automobile accidents. Most of the time this injury gets confused with the other neck and head injuries that occur but if left untreated TMJ can get progressively worse.

If you experience whiplash during an accident this can also cause damage to the TMJ area. When your head is shifted very quickly it can cause your joints and muscles to become injured. The neck muscles, which hold the jaw in place, can misalign and cause your jaw to pop in and out of its socket.

Dental and Medical professionals can diagnose and treat TMJ when they are trained adequately.

Not all health care professionals have the necessary knowledge to deal with TMJ. Once the diagnosis is made there are a number of treatments and physical therapies that can treat your injury. At Mount Holly Family Dentistry we have the right training to know how to treat your TMJ injury.
